Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa to travel abroad?
It depends on your passport and where you are travelling to. Some countries let UK passport holders in without a visa. Others need an eVisa or ETA arranged before you travel, or a visa applied for in advance. Check the guide for your destination to see which applies to you.
What is the difference between a visa and an eVisa or ETA?
A visa is formal permission to enter a country, granted in advance or on arrival. An eVisa is a visa you apply for and receive online rather than as a stamp or sticker. An ETA, or Electronic Travel Authorisation, is a lighter check some countries use instead of a visa for short visits. Which one applies depends on your destination and your passport.
How early should I apply?
This varies by destination and visa type. An eVisa or ETA can sometimes be approved within days. A visa that needs an interview or documents checked in person can take several weeks. Check the processing time on the guide for your destination and apply before you book travel you cannot change.
What happens if I travel without the right visa?
An airline can refuse to let you board if your documents do not meet your destination's entry requirements. If you arrive without the correct visa, the border authority can refuse you entry and return you on the next available flight.
Does my passport need extra validity beyond my trip dates?
Some countries require your passport to remain valid for a period beyond your departure date, for example three or six months. This is set by the destination country, not the UK government, so check the specific figure on the guide for your destination.
